Shows All: Video Gaming Online

Video Gaming has progressed far beyond the simplistic game of Pac-Man many associate gaming with. One of the most popular online games of all time (and one of my personal favorites) requires the constant use of Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity to effectively play: World of Warcraft.

What is World of Warcraft?

World of Warcraft is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) that involves people playing as one of 12 different classes, teaming up together to delve into dangerous dungeons and complete difficult raids. There are three roles: Tanks take the brunt of the damage for everyone, Healers make sure nobody dies, and DPS players deal damage to enemies (I play as a healer).

How does this show the Descriptors?

Raiding is the highest level of content within the game. To effectively go through a raid, one must exhibit a variety of skills, including the four Descriptors. In a single raid (which is done weekly), I must exhibit:

  • Creativity: Raiding requires anywhere from 10 to 30 players to be in a group together, and in many situations, you cannot play your class the same way throughout the raid. One must be flexible and creative in their playstyle to effectively do their job.

  • Collaboration: As previously stated, during a raid I can be working with anywhere from 9 to 29 other people, often in a call together to complete a common goal. This means that everyone must work together effectively to get the job done.

  • Communication: The intrinsic nature of raiding in World of Warcraft is one of immense communication and collaboration. I must communicate with my fellow healers to keep everyone alive, and the tanks to make sure they don't fall in battle.

  • Critical Thinking: Healers in World of Warcraft need to constantly be thinking about how best to keep everyone alive and healthy. This is never as simple as pressing one button over and over; I personally have about 27 buttons that I can use to do different things. I always need to be analyzing the situation to know what to use and when: the outcome of the fight heavily relies on it.
